STEP Ahead is a national program that supports and recognizes the leaders in manufacturing who are driving impact from the shop floor to the C-suite. These leaders serve as living proof of what’s possible in a manufacturing career. By celebrating their stories, and their impact inside their companies and their communities, STEP Ahead helps reshape perceptions of the industry, showcase the wide array of talent that powers it and build a stronger future for manufacturing.
The program features three interconnected components:
STEP Ahead Awards and Leadership Conference
Honoring 145 exceptional leaders each year for their contributions to manufacturing and their communities. These awardees inspire the next generation and showcase the breadth of talent powering the industry. Ahead of the awards gala, awardees attend a two-day leadership conference with tailored workshops and peer networking.
STEP Ahead Mentorship Programs
Mentorship is one of the most effective strategies for supporting employee development and driving a sense of belonging. Both are key to reducing turnover and boosting morale. Yet many companies lack structured mentorship programs that are scalable and aligned with business goals.
The Manufacturing Institute provides direct support to manufacturers looking to build or strengthen mentorship efforts by offering full program design and rollout support. We also operate our own national mentorship program that connects leaders across companies, geographies and career levels.
STEP Ahead Alumni Community
With more than 1,700 alumni across the country, the STEP Ahead alumni community is one of the most powerful networks of leaders in manufacturing. These individuals are ambassadors for the industry, mentors and culture drivers within their companies. They form a nationwide network of past awardees who remain engaged, share expertise and continue to learn from one another while paying it forward to the next generation of manufacturing leaders.
Through year-round programming, peer networking and leadership opportunities, the Manufacturing Institute supports alumni as they continue to grow in their roles and champion the manufacturing sector. Many lead employee resource groups, mentor colleagues or advise on company culture initiatives – creating a ripple effect that strengthens engagement and retention far beyond their own careers.
