STEP Ahead Mentorship

Mentorship is one of the most effective strategies for supporting employee development and driving a sense of belonging. Both are key to reducing turnover and boosting morale. Yet many companies lack structured mentorship programs that are scalable and aligned with business goals.

The Manufacturing Institute provides direct support to manufacturers looking to build or strengthen mentorship efforts by offering full program design and rollout support. We also operate our own national mentorship program that connects women and allies across companies, geographies and career levels.

Manufacturing professionals face real and persistent challenges throughout their careers. Mentees are actively seeking to develop in areas where mentors are best positioned to offer real support. Our data reveals a consistent and meaningful skills gap across career levels in manufacturing:

  • Limited access to leadership development opportunities
  • Limited access to professional networks

These gaps don’t resolve on their own, and they can slow career growth over time.

The STEP Ahead Mentorship Program is designed to directly address these challenges. Mentees gain access to a growing network of manufacturing leaders while receiving tailored guidance to navigate career uncertainty and build critical leadership skills. Mentors engage in a structured opportunity to lead, develop others and give back to the broader manufacturing community.

The desire to grow is strong across our community, and participants are clear about where they want support. The top areas of focus include:

  • Setting and assessing professional goals
  • Building networks for long-term success

Together, these priorities represent nearly half of all focus areas selected by participants.

The STEP Ahead Mentorship Program translates that motivation into action. Through intentional pairings and a structured program, participants set goals, build relationships and develop skills that carry forward beyond the program.
